Less touristy than its neighbours, Paraguay is a prime destination in South America for those who want to get off the beaten track in search of authenticity, low prices and an insane carnival atmosphere!
Nestled between three of the most visited backpacker countries, and still, fairly isolated from them, this region tends to be forgotten due to its lack of touristic infrastructure, its bad reputation for being one of the most corrupt countries in the world, and the fact that half of the country is covered by a hostile semi-arid lowland, El Chaco, also called the “Green hell”…
Nevertheless, Paraguay is a land of opportunities trying to escape decades of dictatorship. Probably one of the most affordable countries to visit South America, Paraguay offers an incredible carnival which is known for being noisier and offering more skin than the Brazilians! It’s also the home of many Jesuit Ruins that can be visited without crowds.
But let’s be honest, the country doesn’t offer much backpacker activities. For this reason, a couple of weeks should be enough for whoever would like to wonder the southern part, the capital city Asuncion, and for the most adventurous crossing to Bolivia by boat through El Chaco. This is all we can wish for you.
