On our first visit to Marrakech, we splurged a little and stayed a few nights at incredible El Fenn – an award-winning Riad world-renowned for its grandeur combined with historic architecture. There are 20 individually styled rooms and suites at El Fenn – 10 with fireplaces and 2 with private terraces and swimming pools as well as 3 communal swimming pools, a restaurant, a cafe and a small but beautifully curated shop.
It’s probably one of the largest Riads in Marrakech but as it’s grown via a series of expansions into small neighbouring houses, it feels very intimate. There are lush gardens and courtyards and an abundance of birdlife as well as numerous small turtles waddling around.
Located by the Bab El Ksour gate, within 5 minutes of Jemaa el Fna square the hotel was founded by Richard Branson’s sister Vanessa Branson and her friend Howell James. El Fenn is often frequented by movie stars and celebrities and is the perfect place for discreet people watching as well as exploring the Medina.
2. Best Mid-range Riads in Marrakech
Riad El Maktoub
Doubles from €55 per night
At Riad El Maktoub, you feel at home. As soon as you walk through the front doors, the young host offers you a lovely mint tea, and explains what to do around Marrakech and what to look out for while in the Souk. The rooms were very comfortable with a large bathroom and excellent water pressure.
The Riad is organised around a small patio where you can chill by the swimming pool and relax your feet after a long day of walking.
We particularly loved the location of the Riad El Maktoub, which is right in the middle of the medina and only a couple of minutes from Jamal-El-Fnaa. If you want to explore the Souks of Marrakech, this is the place to go to. It is in fact, very close to the Spice Market and the Souk des Teinturiers.
Riad Palais des Princesses

One of our favourite places to stay in Marrakech is the beautiful Riad des Princesses. It is located down a little side street in the heart of the Medina, which kept away the noise of the square. The rooms are beautiful and with the air conditioning, you can easily escape from the heat of Marrakech.
The Riad has an indoor pool which was great to relax in and also a spa where you can get a Hammam and massage. What we love the most though, is the rooftop terrace which has sun loungers to relax but also the views from up here are amazing. It is a great spot to watch the sunset in Marrakech.
Riad Mur Akush

The riad Mur Akush is a real oasis in the city, where you can relax after a few busy days sightseeing. It is a small but gorgeous restored house in the heart of the Medina, with 6 rooms, each beautifully decorated following a theme. We love that you can choose the room you prefer upon booking

Riad Jemaa El Fna & Spa

A really beautiful and “Instagram friendly” riad in the centre of Marrakech where you will feel like in the 1000 and 1 nights fairytale. The design is impressive with colourful paintings, tiled floors and carpets. We love the small pool to dip in after a long day haggling and walking the buzzing streets, but also the large terrasse and its many sunbeds.
Upon your arrival, the friendly staff will serve you Moroccan tea and pastries in a traditional living room while you wait to check in and will give you advice about the area if you ask. They are very knowledgeable and super kind. We love the extra mile of always leaving rose petals after cleaning the room. So romantic!

3. Best Budget Riads in Marrakech
Rodamón Riad Marrakech

A hostel in the heart of Marrakech! The perfect place to stay for solo backpackers or groups of friends interested in meeting people and sharing the red city experience with fellow travellers. The hostel is truly beautiful with a patio made of green mosaic tiles and a small pool. There are a lot of areas to relax, read or mingle and a gorgeous terrasse overlooking the city to enjoy breakfast or dinners.
The rooms are large and the beds are intimate with curtains, lockers, lights and plugs.
Riad Miski

Lovingly and tastefully restored by a very helpful French couple, the Riad Miski is located in the centre of the Medina, 15 min walk from the square Jemaa El-Fnaa. Upon arrival, the host will welcome you with a glass of sweet Moroccan tea, and very detailed information about the area, as well as tips on how to avoid the latest scams.
The rooms are all decorated with local handicrafts (that can be purchased) and there are several lounge areas to sit in, relax and have dinner. Oh Riad Laly! It was a dream for our budget and our bodies, both exhausted after our 3-day tour of the Sahara desert. We arrived at Riad Laly in the evening and were received with a huge smile, a lot of kindness and a lovely sweet and minty Moroccan tea.
Located right in the heart of Marrakech, we only had to walk a few minutes to find ourselves at the buzzing square Jamal-El-Fnaa or at the more relaxed quarter where we found shade at the Bahia Palace.
The rooms at Laly were quiet, comfortable and well-decorated. We particularly loved the gorgeous wooden piece of furniture that had been restored with a lot of taste. The bed was very cosy, the wifi excellent and the breakfast served on the terrasse was humongous and delicious.
What we appreciated the most was the kindness of the owner, who always had a nice word for us. We recommend this place to everyone.
